I found this blog article facinating. I so agree, yet I also find it had to be as firm with movies as she is. But she has a serious point, one I'm learning to take more and more to heart. I've always had to be careful with movies, since I have a very active imagination and will dream about a movie later if it's too intense (thus I watched Lord of the Rings in fast forward... hahaha, I wanted to see what all the hype was about, but couldn't stand the violence or suspense!!). But I've been thinking a lot lately how different our standard are now, to what they were even 20 or 30 years ago. I wasn't allowed to watch smurfs, and a whole thwack of kids shows when I was younger, and most of those would be considered peanuts to what kids watch now. Anyways, I'll let you read her blog, you can decide for yourself what you think of her thoughts. Let me know, I'm curious to hear everyone's take on it!!
ps-I haven't read any of the other post on her blog yet...
wow. at first i thought she could see into my home - my girls have fallen in love with the incredibles and are watching it now as i type. oops. i never thought of the word wicked in the way she suggests.
ReplyDeletevery convicting and thought provoking. and yet, i feel that we need to be aware of what is going on around us - the whole "be in the world but not of the world"...does that make sense? i know my children are going to be faced with a lot of different pressures as they grow up and i feel that i need to be knowledge-able about what is in the media. does it mean though that i need to be obsessed about it? no. i think there is a balance that needs to be found.
thanks for posting this!!
I agree Kim. And I'm also finding that that balance can be very different for people too, which sometimes can be hard to wrap our minds around, or at least mine... I know some personalities who can really detatch themselves from what they watch (within reason), then there's people like me who can't watch csi or anything like that without it bothering me... We have no TV at our house, just movies... Still, I'm finding our issue now is more that the kids want to watch movies ALL the time... And sometimes I want that too!!!
ReplyDeleteI agree with her and have been trying to impliment it more into my life. We don't have television but we do watch lots of movies. I find it strange sometimes that I watch sin for fun. It's a work in progress. I'm better at doing it for my kids than myself. My husband loves historical biographical types of movies (mostly war) and that can really start to wear on me as well. I can only watch Band of brothers and schindler lists so many times before it starts to depress me.
